Northeastern Ohio is renowned for medical care and training, and Cleveland is regarded as one of the world’s leading medical centers with internationally acclaimed hospitals.
The Cleveland Clinic is respected for excellence in cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedics and urology. The Clinic, which has been designated as a national health resource by United States Congress, is one of only four facilities nationwide to receive government funding for next wave development of the artificial heart. Areas of research at the Clinic include AIDS, musculoskeletal systems and artificial organs.
University Hospital, also in Cleveland, is a teaching hospital, where the world’s first gas anesthesiology was given. Affiliate, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital is one of the nations best for pediatric and neonatal intensive care.
Metro Health Medical System has a solid reputation for cardiac and burn victim care. Other recognized facilities include Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center in Canton, and Summa Health Care in Akron.
The region is served by over 95 hospitals. Twenty-three of them are affiliated with medical schools. For those seeking medical careers, Case Western Reserve University is known worldwide for Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing.
The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine is a consortium of three area universities and area hospitals serving the region in Portage County, near Akron. NEOUCOM’s objective is to graduate community-oriented physicians to practice in primary care fields. The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine is one of seven facilities in the United States focusing on podiatric medicine.
Health care is one of the region’s top five employers with over 100,000 jobs, providing approximately $9 billion a year. Area hospitals and research centers receive over $100 million annually in funding from the National Institute of Health. Another $250 million is invested every year in medical research.
